Sensation Seeking has repeatedly been related to substance use. Also, its role as a correlate of Gambling Disorder has been discussed although research has led to heterogeneous results. Likewise, first studies on Internet Addiction have indicated increased Sensation Seeking, to some extent contradicting clinical impression of patients suffering from internet addiction. Self-reported dependence on mobile phones in young adults: A European cross-cultural empirical survey

The chapter discusses the main concepts related to addiction and its diagnosis. The definition of addiction and diagnostic criteria for substance and behavior addiction will be discussed. Formal criteria enabling professional treatment and social understanding of the phenomenon are important for systematising knowledge and clearly presenting the profiles of addicts.
